The Seychelles' culture is known for its African, European and Asian roots. Seychelles now has about 83,000 inhabitants who are mostly descendents of the first settlers, their slaves, Indian and Chinese traders, emigrants, political exiles and adventurers.
There are three predominant national languages in Seychelles: Creole (a French-based Patois), English and French.
Though predominantly Roman Catholic, Seychelles is a melting pot of diverse religions, races and tradition, each of which has flavoured the local cuisine, music, dance and architecture. Creole music and dance have their roots in African, Malagasy and European cultures.
Grand old houses on the island, with their steep roofs and special design features are representative of the Creole style of architecture that was adapted for comfortable living in the tropics.
